The average woman spends 17 minutes each morning trying to pick an outfit.

According to a 2016 study by Marks & Spencer, women spend about 17 minutes each morning choosing an outfit to wear to work. Add up 17 minutes per day from age 18 to 60 and you get half a year of lost time.

The problem lies in the daily hassle of selecting an outfit each morning, which is compounded by the awareness of clothes playing a crucial role in shaping people's perceptions, particularly for young, fashion-conscious adults who desire to make a favorable impression while aiming to economize their time and finances.

INTRODUCTION

THE CENTRAL QUESTION

How might we simplify and personalize the process of selecting outfits for young, fashion-conscious adults, enabling them to make confident style choices that save time and align with their budget?

In other words, how might we reduce the stress of daily outfit selection for young adults, transforming it into an enjoyable and creative experience?

THE PROBLEM

THE SOLUTION

FitCheck is a clothing app with the purpose of helping users catalog and plan their outfits for each day/occasion.

The app targets young individuals and provides them with an interface that fuses functionality and aesthetics

MY ROLE

My role includes user research and visual design. Due to a 4-week time constraint and lack of budget, this did not allow for a true user-research; however, I was able to interview two(2) different individuals and was able to discover that, as users, they seek easy and simple tasks especially in the morning.

RESEARCH

Users mainly want a quick and easy way to choose outfits, but time constraints and indecision can make it difficult.

I conducted a contextual inquiry with 2 target users, one who struggles to find time to pick outfits daily and another who has difficulty deciding what to wear.

Afterward, I observed each person throughout their daily process of picking an outfit for the day and created an empathy map with my observations.

DESIGNING

DEFINING CORE PRINCIPLES

Defining core principles to consider the needs of both generations and guide design decisions

01

Simplicity & Efficiency

Ensure the design allows users to make decisions quickly and easily, saving time while meeting their specific needs.

DESIGN DECISIONS

WIREFRAMING

02

Personalization

Offer customized options to match users' preferences and improve their experience.

The Impact/Effort Matrix played a key role in my planning process, allowing me to focus on improvements that would have the most significant effect on the user experience, ensuring efficient use of time and resources.

Before designing my screens, I worked on low-fidelity wireframes to plan the layouts and structure of the app.

DEFINING THE MAIN TASK

For this application’s design, I decided to focus on the task of categorizing and assigning outfits to the user’s calendar

FINAL SCREENS

TAKEAWAYS

keeping it simple & user-focused

Overall, I learned about the importance of simplicity while designing applications. My intent for the impact of the app is to make its users handle tasks more intuitively and efficiently.

Working on this project taught me a lot about the challenges of staying open-minded during the design process. I’ve learned how important it is to step outside my own perspective and think about users who have different needs and preferences. I think embracing the diversity of users and their unique requirements really helped me understand what it means to create designs that are truly user-focused.

moving forward

In future steps, I would like to conduct usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed as well as conduct more user research to determine any new areas that need to be updated.
